US President Joe Biden has spoken with Saudi King Salman for the first time ahead of the release of the intelligence report on the assassination of journalist Jamal Hashukaji, the White House said tonight (Friday).

The 85-year-old king waited five weeks from the swearing-in of Biden until the first phone call from him, amid the resumption of relations between Washington and Riyadh.

The new administration stressed that Biden's communication would be through the king, and not through his son, Muhammad bin Salman, who is considered the de facto ruler of the kingdom.

The report on Hashukaji, who was assassinated and dismembered by Saudi assassins at the consulate in Istanbul in 2018, is expected to hold the regent responsible.

His publicity was halted by the previous administration of President Donald Trump, who protected the young prince and had a close relationship with him.

According to the White House, Biden and Salman highlighted in their conversation the security ties between the two countries, as well as Washington's commitment to protecting the kingdom from attacks by organizations affiliated with Iran.

However, in a significant change from the Trump era, Biden "stressed the importance of human rights and the rule of law in the eyes of the United States."

The announcement did not mention the assassination of Hashukaji, which obscures relations between the old allies.

The Saudi news agency noted that King and Biden stressed the "depth of relations between the two countries" and discussed Iran's actions to undermine regional stability and "its support for terrorist organizations."
