Regensburg / Munich - The Corona * mutant B.1.1.7 continues to spread in the Free State of Bavaria.

The first cases of the variant that is considered particularly contagious have now been detected at the BMW * plant in Regensburg.

There are "a handful of cases," a BMW spokesman told Merkur.de * on Thursday.

Several people were also sent into quarantine as a precaution.

The Mittelbayerische Zeitung had previously reported on the cases.

Among other things, BMW builds the volume models * 1, X1, X2 and the 4-series convertible in Regensburg.

In the summer, the group made the plant fit for the production of plug-in hybrids and fully electric vehicles.

However, the group had to postpone the planned restart of production due to a breakdown during the renovation.

The group employs a total of around 9,000 people in its Upper Palatinate plant.

Measured against this, the number of cases is low.

In the past few months it was “well below the general incidence values”, according to Regensburg.

BMW has taken comprehensive safety precautions, the spokesman emphasized.

In addition to the strict mask requirement, this includes a two-stage corona test system with antigen tests and the more complex PCR tests.

Last September, as part of a series of tests, a total of 32 corona cases were discovered at the BMW plant in the Lower Bavarian plant in Dingolfing and at logistics service providers.

BMW: 7-day incidence in Regensburg below an important limit value

The virus variant B.1.1.7 now detected in Regensburg is considered to be particularly contagious.

Researchers attribute the higher infectivity to an adapted version of the spike protein.

Apparently the spike virus can settle on the body's cells better than the original version.

According to the RKI, the 7-day incidence per 100,000 inhabitants is currently 27.4 in the city of Regensburg and 47.9 in the Regensburg district.
