Iran this evening (Friday) strongly condemned the US air strike last night on the Iraq-Syria border against a pro-Iranian militia.

A State Department statement said the Americans had resorted to "illegal aggression" and violated international law and human rights.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry also condemned the "cowardly" action and urged President Joe Biden not to pursue the policies of his predecessor, President Donald Trump.

"The Biden administration should adhere to the legitimacy granted on the basis of international law and not to the jungle laws like the previous administration."

The Iraqi military has said it is "surprised" by US aggression in Syria.

The military statement said the cooperation with coalition forces amounted to fighting against the Islamic State (ISIS), and that Iraq did not pass on information to the Americans about the targets attacked near the border with Syria, as Defense Minister Lloyd Austin claimed.

Last night's attack came in response to three attacks within a week against US targets in Iraq.

The Pentagon statement said the attack was aimed at facilities on the Syrian-Iraqi border, which are used by pro-Iranian Shiite militias.

According to the Syrian Organization for Human Rights, 17 Iraqi fighters were killed in the attack, but so far one person, an Iraqi Hezbollah fighter, has been officially killed.

It was the first overt reaction of US President Joe Biden, who took office last month, against pro-Iranian targets.

Biden's decision to attack tonight only in Syria and not in Iraq gives the Iraqi government breathing space to complete an investigation into the rocket attack on Arbil, the capital of the Kurdish region.

In the attack, which took place on February 15, several American soldiers were wounded.

A U.S. official told Reuters that Biden was presented with several options for action, and finally the Democratic president chose to take a relatively moderate action.

The source, who spoke anonymously, said the attacks were intended to send a message that the United States wants to punish the militias, without being drawn into a wider confrontation.

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said the attacks were carried out by President Biden, who will work to protect US and coalition forces in the region. However, we have acted in a measured manner, with the aim of not escalating in Iraq and eastern Syria.

Kirby said the facilities attacked were used by several militias, including Hezbollah battalions and the Sid a-Shuhda battalions.

He did not say if there were any casualties in the airstrikes.
