The Arab sector is sharply critical of the police this evening (Friday), after dozens of demonstrators and a policeman were injured during operations to disperse a demonstration in Umm al-Fahm.

In the evening, an emergency meeting was held in the city, with the participation of members of the Umm al-Fahm Council, the People's Committee and representatives of the High Monitoring Committee of the Arab Public in Israel, during which it was decided to hold a demonstration next Friday.

"Establish a commission of inquiry immediately," the sector said.

The protest, which took place for the seventh week in a row against the government's failure to deal with crime in Arab society, developed into severe confrontations.

Among those injured in the demonstration, a business owner in his 30s, who was badly evacuated to the hospital after being hit in the head.

MK Yosef Jabarin (joint list) was also injured by a rubber bullet and was taken to hospital in a light condition. The mayor was also injured in the clashes.

The police said that protesters threw contrast stones at police, injuring a policeman lightly injured as a result, and tried to block the road 65. Four demonstrators were arrested, and they will be taken tomorrow to discuss the Haifa Magistrates Court to extend the arrest.

On the other hand, the demonstrators rejected the allegations.

They said police dispersed them brutally, using tear gas, water cannon and stun grenades.

At an emergency meeting held in Umm al-Fahm expressed condemnation "attack police brutally beating up on non-violent protesters, and elected mayor and members of the Umm al-Fahm and leaders." Participants They also called for the extension of protests to all Arab localities, emphasizing that the demonstrations were only intended to call on the police to take part in the fight against violence.

"The death toll is staggering and unimaginable," said Yanel Jabarin, one of the organizers of today's demonstration in Umm al-Fahm.

"Instead of the government and its leader dealing with criminal organizations, it is engaged in violence against protesters seeking a normal life. We want to integrate into society and live like everyone else without fear. It is time to put an end to this."

The sector also called for the expansion of the campaign calling for the resignation of the commanders of the Umm al-Fahm police station who commanded the event.

This call joins that of MK Jabarin. "The brutal and racist police have attacked non-violent demonstrators who demand personal security in the face of crime," he said.

The police who are strong on protesters, and weak in the face of criminals, will not break us.

We will continue to protest. "

The Mossawa Center, which accompanied the family of the seriously injured at the hospital, appealed to the Police Investigations Department of the Ministry of Justice to open an investigation against the police and officers who acted in the demonstration.

"It is not possible for police officers to endanger people's lives in this way and not be punished," the center said.

The Aman Center, which works for a "safe Arab society," sought to convey a similar message and called for the establishment of a commission of inquiry.

"The violent behavior of the police in Umm al-Fahm must not be tolerated without a deep inquiry into the activities of the police in Arab society. The police behavior is a testament to the depth of the policing problem in Arab society.

Another protest next week.

"The depth of distrust with the police today is conclusively proven in the form of brutal and unrestrained behavior by the police," added Rada Gaber of the Aman Center. "The police have honestly bought and are buying the distrust in it.

It now requires a move of profound change within the police and its theory of operation in Arab society. "
