SPIEGEL:
Mr. Kanning, how did your first interview go?
Uwe Kanning:
Oh, that was a long time ago.
At the time, I applied for a community service position in a clinic for child and adolescent psychiatry.
I sat across from the head doctor, the conversation was completely unstructured.
We chatted a bit about what I had done so far and why I had chosen child and adolescent psychiatry.
I think she just ended up liking it.
That's why I got the job.

Prof. Dr. Uwe Peter Kanning
has been Professor of Business
Psychology
at the Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences since 2009.
His work focuses on personnel diagnostics and questionable methods of personnel work.
Kanning is the author of numerous specialist books and publications, and since 2017 he has been running the YouTube channel “15 Minuten Wirtschaftspsychologie”.
SPIEGEL:
Sounds like most job interviews in Germany.
Kanning:
Exactly.
In the case of a community service office, where qualifications are not so important, this may still be sufficient.
But if you now imagine: you have a solid education, you may have studied, have been abroad, have specialized.
And then there is a personnel manager sitting across from you in the interview who is not at all interested in what you have achieved so far.
You just have to please him or her, make him or her feel good.
