Big jubilation in Hohenfurch: Michael Bernert took part in two projects this year in the young researcher competition “Young researchers / students experiment” - and has now won prizes.

Schongau / Hohenfurch - Michael watched the award ceremony on Thursday afternoon, which Hoerbiger, like the competition itself, organized online this time.

He had connected his laptop to the television so that he could watch the award ceremony on the big screen in the living room.

The Hohenfurcher soon celebrated: Juror Matthias Bergfeld announced his victory in the working world category.

The 14-year-old secondary school student had built a city scooter with a switchable motor so that senior citizens can stay mobile and overcome inclines without effort.

The jury was not only impressed by Michael's well-thought-out construction and the welding work he carried out to perfection, but also the video he shot showing his grandmother in action on the scooter, which was very impressive.

Apparently also the city of Schongau, because Michael got a special price on top of that.

“It's a great feeling to land in first place,” says Michael.

He was only slightly nervous.

Now he is looking forward to taking part in the state competition - for which he has automatically qualified by winning at regional level.

For his second project, a high-end 3D printing booth, he received the special award for hearing, acoustics and noise.

Jury member Patricia Breunig has a lot of respect for all the participants who competed this year despite corona-related obstacles, such as less exchange with supervisors.

During her schooldays at the Welfen-Gymnasium Schongau, she herself took part in “Jugend forscht” several times, which is why the doctoral candidate at the Regensburg Chair for Physics Didactics can empathize with the participants.

Even if the jury was only able to get an idea of all the projects via video conference, everything worked well.

Only sometimes did the technology cause problems.

Quieter tones could sometimes not be heard.

But everyone was well prepared, says Breunig.

For example, some participants had set up their cameras especially in the garden in order to be able to present their project appropriately.

Half an hour was planned for each jury interview so that everyone could answer their questions.

“However, you couldn't stop by again spontaneously, as usual,” says Breunig.

It was a bit more stressful, but well planned by Hoerbiger.

The atmosphere in the hall was still lacking, of course.
