Joe Biden on Saudi Arabia following intelligence report on the murder of Jamal Hashukaji (Reuters)

"There is no smoking gun," supporters of Saudi Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman were quick to announce yesterday after the publication of the American intelligence report on the murder of journalist Jamal Hashukaji.

In a well-orchestrated onslaught, Saudi surfers flooded Twitter with hashtags and tweets expressing loyalty to the young prince, de facto control of the kingdom.

Palace honors said the report contained no new information and no evidence directly linking the king's son to the brutal operation against the regime's opponent.

This demonstration of support is the result of Ben Salman's hard work to remove all his rivals to the crown starting with the yard revolution against his cousin in 2017.

Thus, U.S. intelligence officials have ruled that an operation in a foreign country involving members of the regent's personal guard could not be carried out without his knowledge.

For obvious reasons, the report made public did not detail how evidence was gathered to substantiate this circumstantial assessment.

According to reports released after the assassination, Turkey possessed incriminating recordings, possibly through a means of listening installed at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

The conclusions of the US intelligence report have already been leaked to the media in the United States in the vicinity of the murder, after former President Donald Trump defended his friend Ben Salman and refused to make them public.

His successor, Joe Biden, promised in the election campaign to punish Saudi Arabia and the regent for Hashukaji's assassination, but eventually settled for Sheaming.

Personal sanctions on Ben Salman have led to an unprecedented rift with Saudi Arabia, and the United States still needs it.

Not going anywhere.

Officially Biden will only talk to the king, but in Washington they have realized that there is no way to get around his favorite son.

To the chagrin of some members of the Democratic Party and human rights organizations, Ben Salman did not become the leper and isolated leader he had hoped for.

Biden needs the legitimacy of Saudi Arabia, as well as other countries in the region, in order to return to the nuclear deal with Iran.

At the same time, he is trying to present a firm line against Tehran and has confirmed an act of revenge in Syria against militias loyal to it following the firing on American forces in Iraq.

The change of tone in front of Saudi Arabia lights up red lights for other Washington allies in the region.

The almost free hand given by the previous administration to Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain to do whatever it pleases against the critics of power will no longer exist.

As of Biden's first month in the White House, preserving human rights in the world is his top priority, even if it comes at the expense of relations with allies.

Asked Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who has not yet received a phone call from Biden.

This is also true of Israel.

First squeaks were heard after it became known that the government preferred to export surplus corona vaccines to foreign countries instead of transferring them to the Palestinians.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken spoke with his colleague Gabi Ashkenazi.

Senator Bernie Sanders, who has considerable influence over the administration, was sharper in his response to the news.

Israel eventually changed direction, but the Palestinian issue will once again obscure relations with the United States.

All the more so if Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu establishes a "full-fledged right-wing government," as he promises, based on Itamar Ben-Gvir.

Political considerations increased.

The moderate sanctions and restrictions imposed by the United States on moderate and lower-level Saudi officials will leave room for further cooperation.

Much of the new administration's foreign policy has been devoted to adjusting relations with the kingdom, including ending support for the war in Yemen and halting the sale of offensive weapons.

It is possible that now, the United States will invest similar efforts against rival and hostile countries.

Too much pressure on Ben Salman could cause him to crawl into the arms of rival powers, Russia and China, who must have admired the audacity in eliminating a regime opponent in a foreign country.

He is only 35 years old, with no priesthood restrictions and no primaries.

The shelf life of dictators is usually longer than that of US presidents who are reluctant that sanctions are the solution to everything.

In the final balance of considerations of the Biden administration, realpolitik had more weight than ideology and the administration of justice.
