New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Arden announced today (Saturday) a one-week closure on the country's largest city, Auckland, starting tomorrow.

This is after one of the residents contracted the corona virus from an unknown source.

Health officials said the patient developed symptoms on Tuesday and that he may have been infected by Sunday.

He visited several public places during this period.

"Based on that, we are in this bad, but necessary, situation to protect the people of Auckland again," Arden said in announcing the closure.

Two weeks ago, the city, where about two million people live, was placed under a short three-day closure after a family of three was diagnosed positive for the more contagious British mutation.

Health authorities are trying to find out if there is a connection between the cases.

The new closure, which includes Level 3 restrictions, will allow exit from the home only for essential places or essential work.

Public places will be closed, while in other parts of the country, restrictions will be at level 2. These include restrictions on public gatherings.

New Zealand is one of the countries that has dealt best with the global epidemic.

It has registered just over 2,000 infections and 25 deaths since the first outbreak about a year ago, and just this month it began vaccinating its citizens.

Many places in the world look enviously at New Zealand, which has returned to pre-Corona routine, including holding performances and sporting events without distance restrictions or wearing masks.
