The German non-governmental organization Sea Watch announced today that it has rescued 147 illegal immigrants in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Libya, as part of two rescue operations carried out by its ship Sea Watch 3.
"45 migrants were rescued, including 15 minors, who were trying to reach Europe by sea, and all of them were safe," AP quoted the organization as saying in a statement, adding that "earlier, 102 other migrants were rescued in a rubber boat that sent a distress call."
It is reported that more than 1,200 migrants died in the Mediterranean last year, according to the International Organization for Migration.
