Handball: death of FC Porto and Portugal goalkeeper, following cardiac arrest

Alfredo Quintana, the Portuguese goalkeeper who had recently challenged France at the 2021 World Cup, died on Friday following cardio-respiratory arrest. He was only 32 years old.


Portugal handball goalkeeper Alfredo Quintana, 32, died on Friday following a cardio-respiratory arrest in training on Monday, his club FC Porto announced.

"Alfredo Quintana died at noon today," the northern Portuguese club said in a statement, after being informed by the Sao Joao hospital where he had been admitted.

"The loss as hard as it is unexpected of the man, even more than that of the athlete, leaves FC Porto in mourning", added FC Porto, where Quintana has been playing since 2010. The Portuguese goalkeeper was the victim of 'cardiopulmonary arrest on Monday as he was preparing to start a training session. 

The club also published a video on Friday on its Twitter account, of a small minute, with some of the most beautiful parades of Quintana in the jersey of Porto, allowing to review once again its reflex stops that made it the one of the best goalies in the world.

The club accompanied its video by writing: "Now we have a mission: to tell, to whom has not seen, the stories, the stops, the matches and the privilege that it was to have Alfredo Quintana defending Our goal."

Cuban by birth, Quintana was naturalized in 2014, participating in the emergence of Portugal on the international scene in recent years (6th in Euro 2020).

He was to play from March 12 to 14 in the Olympic qualifying tournament in Montpellier with Croatia, France and Tunisia, with the objective of winning a first ticket to the Games for the Portuguese hand.

The world of handball paid tribute to Quintana on social networks on Friday afternoon.

“Forever, Alfredo.

Saying thank you is not enough, ”tweeted the Portuguese Handball Federation, with three photos of the goalkeeper.

She also posted a black and white video with the text: "Legends never die".

“Day of infinite sadness.

May the earth be light to you Alfredo.

We will not forget you ”, reacted the goalkeeper of Paris SG, the French international Vincent Gérard.

The International Federation (IHF) also broadcast a video of Quintana's parades during the last World Cup held in January in Egypt and finished in 10th place for Portugal.

"Alfredo Quintana: the warrior gone too early", wrote the IHF on his Twitter account.

“We send our deepest condolences to the family and teammates of Alfredo Quintana.

Rest in peace, ”responded the French Handball Federation on its Twitter account.
