Exactly three years ago, in February 2018, the murder of investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancé Martina Kušnírová rocked Slovakia.
At the same time, the act motivated a number of younger people to switch to politics.
So does the lawyer Zuzana Čaputová.
In 2019, Čaputová, then 45 years old, was elected President - as a representative of a liberal, pro-European protest movement.
SPIEGEL:
Madam President, almost nowhere else in the world is currently dying of Corona in relation to the population as in Slovakia.
Why is the pandemic hitting your country so hard?
Čaputová:
We're still looking for the reasons for this sad record.
We were among the best at fighting the first wave, but the second wave has proven to be far more dangerous around the world.
We underestimated this danger last summer.
Slovakia is the only country in the world that has decided to test the entire population, even several times.
After the antigen test, people received a negative certificate that was valid for seven days.
And with that you move - which could ultimately have led to more infections.
In addition, our health sector was not prepared for such a crisis.
