Australian media quoted data from the Australian Department of the Interior on March 1 stating that the government has granted asylum visas to Hong Kong people for the first time in more than 10 years.

The Cantonese group of SBS Chinese Channel in Australia reported on the 1st that it obtained data from the Ministry of the Interior that the country granted refugee status to all Hong Kong people who applied for asylum visas in that month in December 2020.

SBS found that this is the first time that Australia has granted this type of visa to Hong Kong people in 10 years.

No Hong Kong residents will be approved in January 2021.

Statistics show that in the past 10 years and 6 months, a total of 560 Hong Kong residents have applied for asylum visas to the Australian government. Among them, 270 have submitted their applications after the anti-revision demonstrations broke out in Hong Kong in June 2019.

In January 2021, 10 people applied for relevant visas.

According to data, from July to December 2019 and from January to June 2020, 82 people applied for this visa.

From July to December 2020, 106 people submitted applications, an increase of nearly 30%.

A spokesperson for the Australian Department of the Interior said that the department will not give priority to visas based on the applicant's nationality, but will consider the approval criteria, including whether the applicant faces a major risk of injury in the original country.
