An investigation was opened after the death on Saturday evening of an indigenous man during a police intervention in the province of British Columbia, in western Canada, authorities said Sunday (February 28).

The incident took place in the indigenous community of Opitsaht, near Vancouver, after two police officers visited a residence to
"locate a woman in distress,"
police said in a statement.
"When they arrived at the scene, there was an interaction with people there, and a man was shot and another was taken into custody,"
police said.
The woman was taken to hospital for a medical evaluation.
The Vancouver Island General Investigations Section is investigating the call that prompted the intervention,
"including allegations that the woman was being held against her will,"
police continued.
British Columbia's office of independent
investigations "is investigating fatal gunshot involving police,"
the statement said.
