In order to have a companion in the pandemic, many people have bought a dog.

But what is currently missing is the opportunity to attend a dog school.

Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen

- "At the moment, I receive inquiries almost every day from new dog owners or customers who have received their dogs from animal welfare," says Marianne Völkl, dog trainer from Lenggries.

For example, they desperately seek advice when the dogs are through puberty.

In dogs between the ages of six and twelve months, this is a very difficult phase, as Völkl says.

"The dog seems to have forgotten everything in the meantime, the ears are switched to draft." She stands by her customers with advice over the phone, "but not with action".

Dog trainers "play an important role in society," says dog trainer Diana Lischka from Wolfratshausen.

"Dogs are very social creatures and the bottom line is that they suffer." Support is extremely important, especially for first-time dog owners or for owners of animal welfare or problem dogs.

“A lack of training can have serious consequences under certain circumstances.” The less experience the dog owner brings, the greater the risks.

The first year of life is decisive for the further development of the dog

Dogs usually come to the dog school between the eighth and twelfth week.

That is where the socialization phase begins, says Marianne Völkl.

"With us, the dogs learn to make contact with other animals of the same age."

Any mistakes during this time could have a lifelong effect.

This is also what Stefanie Lang von Langen, animal psychologist and behavioral trainer from Gaißach, says.

"The first year of life is crucial for further development." If things go well with a lot of calm and socialization, then later on you will have a relaxed partner by your side.

“If the first year is characterized by excessive demands and stress, then problem behavior can arise later.” According to Völkl, these problems could later be aggression in situations that overwhelm the dog, as well as strong insecurity and fear of new situations.

The dog may then also find it difficult to deal with other dogs.

Dog trainer offers digital support when walking

Lang von Langen sees another problem facing all dog trainers once the lockdown is over.

“A lot of dogs will have difficulties staying at home alone.” Due to home office, school at home and exit restrictions, many people are now constantly with the animals - that is likely to change again.

"I therefore advise all of my customers to leave the house for 15 minutes now, too."

The fact that many people got dogs in the pandemic can be seen as positive.

"Many people feel better because they are not alone," says Lang von Langen.

"That way you get through the crisis better."

In addition to telephone assistance, she also tries to keep in touch with her customers digitally.

“You are very grateful for a contact point.

But that doesn't replace personal contact. ”Diana Lischka offers puppy and young dog owners digital support.

She “accompanies” her customers virtually on walks.

"So you can contact me directly if you have any questions."

Basically, it is important for everyone concerned that a dog owner seeks advice, says Lang von Langen: "You shouldn't be afraid to call the trainer you trust and work out a timetable together."
