Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy was convicted today (Monday) of bribery and corruption and sentenced to 12 months in prison, following an affair in which he offered bribes to a judge.
Tsarkozi was sentenced to three years in prison with two of them on probation.
Sarkozy, who ruled France from 2007 to 2012, denies the offenses attributed to him and claims his innocence.
Sarkozy, who holds influence in conservative circles in the country, is likely to appeal the ruling, and has the ability to do so in the next ten days.
After Jacques Chirac, Sarkozy is the second president in France to be convicted of an offense during his tenure.
According to the indictment, Sarkozy offered a job to Judge Gilbert Aziber, in exchange for confidential information about another case that was conducted against the affair.
