The Corona warning app fell short of expectations.

A start-up now wants to do everything better with its own app.

The prospects are good - not least thanks to prominent support.

Berlin - Last year a lot of money and effort was invested in the development of the Corona * warning app.

But it is now clear: the app cannot meet expectations and its benefits are far less than hoped.

The new Corona app "Luca" now wants to do better what the app from the Robert Koch Institute couldn't - and make chains of infection quickly traceable.

Corona warning app: Luca app wants to identify chains of infection earlier

“When there's a fire, you don't ask: Who invents the fire extinguisher?

We have the fire extinguisher there, it is ready and it can now be used. ”With these words the most famous head of the Luca app development team, Smudo, musician of the Fantastischen Vier (Fanta 4), yesterday advertised his new app to Anne Will .

And apparently his pithy words met with a great response from the population.

Because less than 24 hours after the broadcast was broadcast, the app's servers were initially overloaded.

The app has already recorded over 100,000 downloads in the Google Play Store.

Corona warning app: do we still need a corona app?

But what does the app actually promise and what does it want to do differently than the corona warning app financed by the federal government?

At its core, the Luca app aims to identify chains of infection more quickly and be part of a specific opening strategy.

The development company 'Cultur4live' advertises with a "fast and complete contact tracking".

To make this possible, however, the app requires the help of health authorities and organizers and as many downloads as possible.

In some areas, such as on Sylt or Schwerin, the first collaborations are already underway.

Instead of the annoying paperwork, the app offers a digital solution to enable contact tracking after a visit to a restaurant or concert.

After installation, each user first stores their name, address and contact options.

To enable contact tracking, users check in with a QR code when entering a restaurant and check out again when leaving.

If a restaurant or concert goer tests positive at a later point in time, they have the option of voluntarily sharing their past contacts and visits saved in the app with the health department.

The health department, in turn, can then contact other restaurant visitors and inform them of the infection.

The app can be used not only for events, but also for private meetings.

According to the app developer, the information is stored decentrally and only transmitted in encrypted form.

The health department should only be able to read the data in the event of an infection.

Otherwise, neither the app nor the organizers or users should have an insight into the data.

Corona app Luca wants to facilitate contact tracking

Last year there was a heated discussion about how the population and the economy can help to simplify contact tracing.

In many restaurants there were lists on which customers should put their names.

But the paper mess was extremely unpopular because in some cases the notes were lying around carelessly and no data protection could be guaranteed.

In addition, the lists were found to be extremely annoying by many, which is why some users left no or only incorrect contact information.

Even the 67 million euro Corona warning app could not make a decisive contribution to more effective contact tracking.

Rapper Smudo hopes that contact tracing could speed up and the app could help open up gastronomic and cultural establishments.

But as with the federal government's Corona warning app, the Luca app can only be successful if as many people as possible are there.
