After an operation, Oskar Zimmermann still had all sorts of plans, but that never happened: The Argeter, known everywhere in Sauerlach, died at the age of 97.

Sauerlach

- Almost everyone in the village knew him: Oskar Zimmermann.

The Argeter was not only a committed councilor and second mayor, he also campaigned for many associations, spent years traveling the world with the Raiffeisenbank Sauerlach travel group and always had an open ear for his fellow men.

Zimmermann died on February 8 at the age of 97.

He was born on October 26, 1923 in Arget.

He served in France during World War II and was later transferred to Russia.

After the end of the war he returned home and married his wife Maria in August 1950.

The two had two children, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

"He was a sociable, kind-hearted person who loved his family," says his son Oskar Zimmermann.

In summer he always looked forward to the barbecue evenings in the garden followed by card games.

"Sitting together with four generations of the family was something very special for him."

But not only his family mourns him, many CSU members knew and valued Zimmermann.

He was for almost 20 years for the CSU in the Arget local council and later in the Sauerlach local council for almost as long.

From 1966 to 1978 Zimmermann held the office of second mayor.

“He was a committed CSU member,” says his son.

"He was always very enthusiastic when he received congratulations from Edmund Stoiber, Horst Seehofer or Markus Söder on his big birthdays."

Zimmermann was not only active in local politics, he was also active in many associations.

"Every club was proud that they were there," says his son.

With his knowledge of the place and his experience as a full-time real estate appraiser, he was able to contribute something everywhere.

As a founding member, he especially enjoyed attending the events of the sports club.

“Even though he was not active himself, his favorite sport was football.” He not only enjoyed watching the tournaments of the local sports club, but also the Bundesliga and Champions League.

With the retirement came the great desire to travel

When he retired at the age of 65, Zimmermann's desire to travel began.

America, Turkey, China, Russia, Norway - he visited many countries with the Raiffeisenbank Sauerlach travel group.

His wife Maria often accompanied him until she died unexpectedly in 2004.

"It was difficult for him, but his family supported him."

Mentally fit and healthy into old age - that was Oskar Zimmermann.

He never brought a walking aid.

“He always did his shopping himself until the end.” Also to keep in touch with the citizens.

However, Zimmermann had to undergo an operation in autumn 2020.

"After the operation, he was discharged from the hospital much too early," says his son.

Zimmermann had to go to the clinic twice, and the doctors then sent him to rehab.

Back at home, the 97-year-old found that he was no longer as physically fit as before.

But Zimmermann wanted to fight back his old form.

The morning before he died, he told his son hopefully that he and his physiotherapist would like to use crutches in the garden the next time he visits.

After lunch Zimmermann lay down.

"On that day, surprisingly for all of us, he did not wake up and fell asleep peacefully forever."
