St. Wolfgang - The fiber optic broadband expansion started on Friday in the municipality of St. Wolfgang.

The aim is to provide the "white spots" with ultra-fast internet.

Mayor Ullrich Gaigl (FW) and the managing director of Kommunalen Stadtwerke Dorfen GmbH, Klaus Steiner, had signed the concession contract the day before in the town hall.

Planning difficulties and a new tender delayed the project by well over a year (we reported).

The broadband expansion costs a total of 3.7 million euros, of which the municipality has to tax 748,000 euros.

Now the broadband expansion for over 340 buildings in over 81 districts could finally begin, said Gaigl and Steiner happily when they followed the first cable laying work with a plow near the hamlet of Aign.

When the total of 204 kilometers of fiber optic lines are in the ground, all properties in the community have high-speed internet.

In an interview with our newspaper, the mayor said: “I am delighted that Stadtwerke Dorfen have been awarded the contract.

We have a very good partner with contact persons on site. "

The first broadband expansion section was realized with Telekom, Gaigl reminded, what was owed to the Bavarian funding program.

The expansion with at least 30 Mbit / sec was mainly carried out over the last mile of copper (telephone lines).

At that time, they also had a second offer that was around 600,000 euros above that of Telekom and therefore could not win the bid.

That would have been better in the end, because the provider would have already set up a complete fiber optic network at that time.

Twelve months of construction had been agreed with Telekom, 19 months it was.

This time, Gaigl is optimistic that the agreed implementation will be achieved by September 2022.

The first thing to do is to start plowing in order to do as little damage as possible to the agricultural fields before sowing begins.

Steiner described the fact that, together with Kraftwerke Haag Netz GmbH, power lines were being replaced and laid in the ground as a “nice thing”.

The construction work will be carried out in several stages.

They are already trying to pre-market them.

This means that declarations of use are concluded, in which the property owners give their consent that fiber optic cables may be laid on their floors.

Steiner promises "that every household will now have a visit from the public utility company," where advice will then take place.

One hopes for a 100 percent quota when activating the telecommunications services.

Steiner emphasized that the community was investing “considerably” in the expansion.

Then, if possible, all citizens should take part.

The technical director of the Dorfen energy supplier and telecommunications company, Alois Huber, explained that the St. Wolfgang fiber optic broadband network is supplied via 20 distributors.

And later it is possible to set up your “own spot”.

It doesn't need that now, however, because the new data network can also be supplied via a fiber optic cable from Dorfen.

This means that implementation is “significantly faster”. The connections are put into operation as soon as a section is finished, not when everything has been expanded.

The first fiber optic house connections and activations will be able to take place this year.

Even when the pandemic is over, many employees will no longer commute to the office every day: "A lot will change there," Steiner is certain.

A reasonable broadband supply via the fiber optic network is therefore "an absolutely crucial location factor for a municipality".

At the moment transfer rates of up to one gigabit / sec are offered.

With the technology, one is currently well equipped for the future, in contrast to data transfer via copper lines.

Stadtwerke boss Steiner assured that everything was free of charge until the connection in the house.

For the activation including a router (FritzBox) a one-time fee of 380 euros is due.

On request, the municipal utilities also take on in-house installation work.

All of the Stadtwerke's services can be booked online.
