The sun and spring fever remain deceptive: A massive drop in temperature brings winter back to Germany and ensures icy nights.
Munich - It was just too good to be true: As if out of nowhere, the temperatures shot into an early spring high in February.
The Germans happily crawl out of their lockdown holes and the line at the ice cream parlor next door looks more like May than February.
At the beginning of the first week of March, Hoch "Jacqueline" also does the meteorological beginning of spring credit and ensures high temperatures.
The German Weather Service (DWD) calculates values in the double-digit range: "On Wednesday [...] the highest temperatures are likely to be measured, on the Upper Rhine 16 to 17 degrees are possible locally." Apart from a few fog fields, it also remains largely free of precipitation and sunny.
Despite the sunshine, the winter coat shouldn't completely disappear in the closet yet.
For several weeks now, weather experts have been warning of another onset of winter in March.
These fears now seem to be confirmed.
Temperatures could drop radically on Thursday night.
A low over Russia sends a cold front towards Germany and ends the spring weather in the truest sense of the word ice cold.
It could be up to ten degrees colder from Thursday.

Snow and permafrost in March: winter is coming back to Germany
The following week, March will likely remain uncomfortable as well.
"In the first week of March it goes down a bit, in the second week of March it is much clearer, probably already below the climatological average," explains Jan Schenk from the

From Friday, the DWD expects persistent snowfall at temperatures around freezing point, especially in the southern half of the Federal Republic.
It is not yet clear whether the temperatures will eventually drop further or whether we will only have to expect permafrost at night.
An alternative weather model from the USA is more optimistic here.
But one thing is certain: March will certainly not be quite as spring-like as the end of February.
The winter coat should therefore remain within reach.
