Ex-President Donald Trump in Orlando: New speech, old tone
Photo: John Raoux / AP
Everything is like it used to be.
The pop oldies to get you in the mood.
The dancing fans.
His dramatic appearance on the patriotic hymn "God Bless The USA".
You feel like you're in the 2020 election. Or 2016.
But it's 2021. It's been almost four months since Donald Trump lost the election and five weeks since he vacated the White House.
Since then he has been brooding in quiet exile in Mar-a-Lago, his luxurious private club in Palm Beach.
They haven't seen him since.
Until now, on Sunday afternoon - which is why the cheering lasts for minutes when he steps onto the stage of a hotel ballroom, here in the heart of Florida, his new home state and headquarters.
He strokes the stars and stripes: "Do you miss me already?"
Groaning in agreement: »USA!
USA!
USA!"

Trump's speech at the final of the CPAC Republican meeting, his first since the change in power, was advertised as a big comeback.
As a signal that he is far from defeated.
That he still has a firm grip on the party.
This is how it begins.
"Our movement has only just begun," he promises them.
"And in the end we will win." The mostly maskless audience jumps from their chairs, jumping up and down with a soul.
"USA!
USA!"
