He had lost the election of the CDU chairman to Armin Laschet, and his offer to become Minister of Economics was rattled down by Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Friedrich Merz is now cautious about another attempt at returning to politics.
He is considering a candidacy in the Hochsauerlandkreis for the federal election in September, said the 65-year-old of the "Westfalenpost".
He was therefore "asked by several city association chairmen in the Sauerland" whether he could imagine running for the constituency.
"I'm not averse," said the former chairman of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group.
Merz announced his return to politics two years ago.
At the end of 2018, he initially lost to Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer in the race for the chairmanship of the CDU.
In January, after Kramp-Karrenbauer's withdrawal, he had to admit defeat to the North Rhine-Westphalian Prime Minister Laschet in the election of the CDU chief.
After that he held back with statements about his further political ambitions.
Two competitors in the Sauerland
Moving into the Bundestag is not possible without further ado: the current CDU member of the Bundestag for the Hochsauerlandkreis is interior expert Patrick Sensburg.
He took over the constituency from Friedrich Merz in 2009.
In addition, according to "Westfalenpost", the Mesched city association nominated the 35-year-old politician Bernd Schulte for the federal election campaign at the weekend.
He is deputy chairman of the CDU district parliamentary group in Hochsauerland and head of division in the Düsseldorf State Chancellery.
He did not want "an open field battle" for the candidacy in the Sauerland, Merz told the newspaper.
The constituency has always been known for its unity.
The decision on the next CDU candidate for the Bundestag should be made at the end of April.
