The Mount Sinabung volcano in Indonesia erupted today, releasing a cloud of hot ash that reached a height of five kilometers, in its first major eruption since August of last year.
Reuters quoted the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazards Mitigation in Indonesia as saying that there had been no news of casualties, thanks to local authorities' earlier warning to residents to stay at least three kilometers from the crater.
The activity of Mount Sinabung volcano has increased since last year and North Sumatra Province announced that the volcano warning is at its second highest level.
There are about 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia, which is the largest number of active volcanoes in any country in the world ... and Mount Sinabung volcano remained dormant for centuries until it erupted in 2010.
