At least five people died and three others remain in intensive care after falling from the fourth floor of the UPEA university in Bolivia when one of the building's railings gave way, Government Minister Carlos Eduardo del Castillo confirmed in his account from Twitter.
The accident occurred this Tuesday during an assembly of the students of the Business Administration career of the Public University of El Alto, Bolivia, the University Press Department confirmed to CNN.
In images that circulate on social networks, you can see the agglomeration of students in one of the corridors of the building and later as the railing ends up giving way until the students fall, some manage to hang from the edge.
The University issued a statement, which was published by the Bolivian Information Agency (ABI), indicating that the Legal and Infrastructure Directorate is collaborating with the authorities carrying out the investigation.
In addition, the institution reported that it has initiated an internal investigation into the events and will be collaborating on student health issues.
The president of Bolivia, Luis Arce, spoke about what happened through his Twitter account: “We regret the tragedy that occurred at the Public University of El Alto (UPEA), where there were several deaths and injuries.
Our deepest condolences to the people of El Alto and to the suffering families.
We await the prompt clarification of the facts.
