Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said today (Tuesday) that his country and Denmark will cooperate with Israel in producing vaccines against the corona virus.

He said the vaccination campaign in the EU was "too slow" - only 7.5% of the bloc's residents had been vaccinated against the virus at least once, compared to 31% in the UK and 53.7% in Israel.

"We need to be prepared for further mutations and we can no longer depend solely on the EU to manufacture second-generation vaccines," Kurtz said.

He said Austria and Denmark "will not rely on the EU in the future and in the coming years will produce second-generation vaccines for future corona virus mutations, along with Israel, in addition to a joint study of possible treatments."

The Prime Minister of Denmark, Mate Fredriksen, said unilateral action was needed due to the difficulties in delivering the vaccines.

"I do not think the EU strategy alone is enough, because we need to increase capacity," she said.

"That is why we are ready to start a partnership with Israel now."

The EU vaccine strategy suffers from supply disruptions due to manufacturing problems, and also due to unsubstantiated objections regarding the use of the Astrazenica vaccine.

In recent weeks, several other countries in the bloc have signaled that they want to use vaccines that have not yet been approved by the European Medicines Agency.

The Hungarian government has already begun vaccinating its citizens with vaccines manufactured in Russia and China.

A spokesman for the European Commission rejected the feeling that solidarity among the 27 members of the bloc was crumbling due to frustration with the pace of vaccines.

Another spokesman said European countries may purchase additional vaccines as long as they do not do so in side negotiations with the main suppliers of the EU, Pfizer, Moderna and Astraznica.
