An unprecedented report of its severity was published today (Tuesday) by a special commission of inquiry of the United Nations regarding human rights violations in the various detention facilities in Syria. According to the report's conclusions, all parties involved in the war committed serious offenses and arbitrary arrests during the civil war. But the Assad regime's incarceration system, alongside that of ISIS and al Qaeda, has committed serious war crimes.

The thirty-page report is the result of 2,500 interviews conducted by the committee with refugees, fighters and senior members of the regime and among the rebel forces and is the most comprehensive document of its kind written on the issue of the prison system in Syria to date.

Today, @UNCoISyria publishes report looking back on 10 years of heinous violations & abuses in detention facilities in #Syria #humanrights Read there report here: https://t.co/SOHLTdK9dr (Arabic version to follow) See the full video here: https://t.co/BKayTKURH9 pic.twitter.com/vofBilo9Jh

According to the report, tens of thousands of men, women and children, were arrested without evidence and arbitrarily tortured in the regime’s prisons. Thousands of them were executed and their burial place is unknown.

"Among the methods of torture used by the regime are electrocution, burning of body parts, nail and tooth removal, imaginary executions, folding prisoners into car tires, crucifixion or hanging of a prisoner from one of the limbs for an extended period, all combined with cruel and incessant beating," the report said. .

Terrifying of all is the passage in the report dealing with children: “The Syrian regime regularly detained boys aged 12 or less when its people beat, starved and deprived them of access to drinking water and medical treatment in mass detention facilities.

Boys and girls were raped and sexually abused in order to humiliate them and intimidate the communities from which they came.

"Militias affiliated with the regime used children as bargaining chips in captive deals with the rebels."

The report found that the Syrian regime, not only did not act to prevent human rights violations or abuse, acted vigorously to conceal evidence of such actions, thereby encouraging abusers to continue. The report found that the regime bears most of the responsibility for the atrocities, but also groups Others, including the rebels, ISIS and Jabhat al-Nusra, but also the Kurdish rebels, bear responsibility for human rights violations.

"Suffering beyond imagination"

Hani Magali, a member of the UN Commission on Syria, said at the publication of the report: "While the commission has previously worked to publish revelations about the horrific, inhuman and despicable situation in the Syrian prison system, the urgency of the issue has now risen due to the coronation epidemic. The disease and without any chance of receiving medical treatment. "

The committee's chairman, Paolo Pinahario, referred to the cause of the tens of thousands of missing persons in the regime's prisons and said: "Hundreds of thousands of the families of the missing persons have the right to know the truth about the fate of their loved ones.

They are in a terrible state of suffering beyond all imagination. "

Contrary to previous reports in which the organization feared pointing an accusing finger at the regime in Damascus, the authors of the current report consider the regime responsible not only for the atrocities but also for concealing them. The Kuning Abuseid Foundation, a member of the committee, wrote when publishing the report: "All sides in the fighting have failed to investigate the conduct of their forces. In the regime's case, it seems that the focus is on hiding what is being done in the detention facilities, and not on interrogating them."
