In June 2018, the iPhone 8 had been on the streets for less than a year.

It was the fashionable phone, and Julieta Bonanno - at the time a 29-year-old lawyer, almost recently graduated - had gotten one.

In the courts of Morón, where he litigated, he liked to comment that his Mexican clients paid him.

The device, plus the 40 gigabytes of information that could be rescued from it in an investigation carried out in the United States, are one of the main evidence for the prosecution in the oral trial that will begin this Tuesday, via Zoom.

Bonanno will participate from the Ezeiza women's prison.

About 70 witnesses will pass the debate, it is in charge of the Federal Oral Court No. 8 and the prosecutor Marcelo Colombo will be in charge of carrying out the accusation.

Bonanno is being processed with preventive detention for a bloody double crime that occurred on the afternoon of Monday, June 4, 2018. Only blurred images of some security cameras were obtained from the hit man who executed him.

All the clues about his identity have so far been irrelevant.

Despite her limited experience, and for reasons not yet explained by her or others, Bonanno ended up representing three Mexican citizens detained in the "White Bobbins" case, in which some 1,900 kilos of cocaine were seized in July of 2017. Most of the drug (about 1,300 kilos) had been packaged in a very sophisticated way to be smuggled into Canada and Spain.

The coils were in a warehouse in the Bahia Blanca industrial park that had been rented by the drug traffickers a few months before June 18, 2017, the day on which Campana federal judge Adrián González Charvay ordered the mega-operation.

Curiously, the trial of "Bobinas Blancas" is now taking place in the Bahian Justice and even more curious is that all the accused of drug trafficking (six in total) pleaded guilty at the first hearing.

They will be condemned without even kicking.

One of the three clients of Bonanno in the "Bobinas Blancas" case was the Mexican Rodrigo Alexander Naged Ramírez (59), who ended up shot and killed along with his Colombian son John Naged Ramírez (30) in the apartment they rented on Cabildo Avenue. 2659.

Naged Ramírez Sr. was not still in prison like the rest of the defendants because he had suffered a stroke and the Justice was in an evaluation process to determine if he was in a mental condition to be tried.

The bad tongues say that the narco was recovering very well with the help of his son, who had traveled especially to take care of him.

They also comment that

his plan was to speak regretfully.

That is why they killed him.

The double crime occurred on Monday, June 4, 2018, almost under the nose of Bonanno, who was in the victims' department and, according to the security cameras, practically

crossed the path of the hit man.

The lawyer went from presenting herself to the media as a survivor, as a lucky woman (inexplicable that a hitman leaves witnesses), to ending up a few hours later arrested and buried by an avalanche of evidence.

Damn pandemic

The trial against Bonanno was to begin on March 19, 2020, the day that turned out to be the beginning of the first quarantine.

The Covid-19 pandemic and the announcement by the Government to restrict movements as much as possible for preventive reasons was postponing it.

This delay worked against the only defendant, for various reasons.

On the one hand, the most logical, delayed the moment that she - as she told

Clarín

in a report - was waiting to claim her innocence.

On the other, in that period more evidence was added against him.

To be clearer.

When on October 30, 2018, the investigating prosecutor requested that Bonanno be brought to trial, the case for the double homicide had 24 bodies (almost 4,800 pages).

Now it is double.

The mysterious note that lawyer Julieta Bonanno had about the Mexican drug lord and his son who were murdered in Belgrano.

Above, the suggestive words "dead" and "they are going to kill him" next to their surnames.

During the year of the coronavirus, another 26 bodies (5,200 more pages) were sent to Comodoro Py from the González Charvay federal court.

The complementary material is vast, very juicy and rounds off the panorama that had already been gathered in the file.

Mainly what was incorporated was the expertise carried out by the Cellebrite company on the defendant's iPhone 8.

Cellebrite had already managed to open the lawyer's iPhone 6, but in 8 many more things were found:

some 85,000 photos, contacts and even a dialogue in which she talks about motorcycles, weapons and her contacts with Mexican bosses.

Those expertise (which cost $ 4,680 over the phone) were the icing on the cake for the prosecution, mainly because of their content and because of what it was possible to work on based on the information they kept.

The content of the iPhone 6 was contemplated in the requirement of elevation to court.

But what was in the iPhone 8 was obtained later.

That is why this Tuesday, when the oral trial begins, surely one of the battles that the prosecution and defense will face will be the admission of everything investigated from the opening of this last cell phone in the United States.

The defense has already submitted a brief and

is playing all its chips to question the chain of custody

.

Nor is he satisfied that the trial is not in person but rather by Zoom.

"There are claims of nullity that the court must resolve prior to starting the debate. We also opposed and are opposed to carrying it out electronically. The reason: the control of the test is totally impossible in that modality," he told

Clarín

Leopoldo Murúa, defender of Bonanno with Nicolás Proz.

"After the first hearing we will see the steps to follow.

The case is full of irregularities,

" added Murúa.

As for Julieta, he said: "She is calm and waiting to carry out the trial."

Nothing else for now.

But from both sides of the process they promise heavy artillery.

The end of this battle is still open.
