After a discussion with the State Attorney's Office, the police decided not to request an extension of his detention, and Ibrahim Hamid is expected to be released this evening. • He claimed that he was frightened when dozens of ultra-Orthodox threw stones at him.
After being beaten and attacked by ultra-Orthodox in the area of Haneviim Street in Jerusalem, and subsequently ran over Itamar Ben Abu to death, the police are not expected to request the extension of the arrest of driver Ibrahim Hamid.
A hearing is currently being held with the State Attorney's Office and it is possible that he will be released tonight (Tuesday).
Hard to watch: moments of trampling during a riot in Jerusalem
It will be recalled that the Jerusalem Magistrate's Court earlier this week extended the detention of Ibrahim Hamid, a resident of East Jerusalem.
Hamid, who was injured in the incident, claimed during his interrogation that he was frightened when dozens of ultra-Orthodox people gathered around the vehicle in which he was traveling and threw stones at him, and therefore accelerated his vehicle.
Also in 2014, Hamid's father was killed in a car bomb attack at the light rail station in Shimon Hatzadik in Jerusalem, when a terrorist collided with a station laden with passengers.
In the moments of Ben Abu's run-over, the medical teams of the Rescue Union provided Landres with first aid. Nahum Bernstein, a paramedic at the Rescue Union, said: "This is a pedestrian who was hit by a shuttle vehicle. We provided him with first aid and at this stage his condition is defined as serious."
