Reporters Without Borders (RSF) today (Tuesday) filed a lawsuit against Saudi Arabia's heir to the throne, Muhammad bin Salman, for 'crimes against humanity', for his involvement in the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Hashukaji.

In a complaint filed by the organization in a German court, Saudi Arabia is accused of persecuting dozens of journalists in addition to Hashukaji, who was murdered at the Saudi embassy in Istanbul in October 2018. The

indictment follows an intelligence report released by the United States over the weekend .

However, Reporters Without Borders claims that they have evidence of Saudi Arabia's "attack and reflection of journalists" policy, which they submitted to the constitutional court in the city of Karlsruhe, which approved the report.

The report details cases of 34 Saudi journalists imprisoned in the country, including blogger Raif Badawi, who has been jailed since 2012 for "insulting the religion of Islam."

The organization called on the German court to make a decision.

"No one should stand above international law, especially when crimes are being committed against humanity," they said.

Aside from the heir apparent, the complaint is directed against his senior aide Saud al-Qahtani, who is suspected of taking a direct part in the planning and execution of Hashukaji's assassination, along with three government officials.

Following the international storm, Saudi authorities arrested 21 suspects involved in the assassination operation, and in January 2019 the trial of 11 defendants, which took place behind closed doors, opened.

Five were sentenced to death, but he was commuted to 20 years in prison after receiving forgiveness from Hashukaji's family members who are still living in Saudi Arabia.

Three others were sent to shorter prison terms.

Following the publication of the report, the United States announced that it would impose sanctions and restrictions on dozens of Saudi citizens following the assassination of journalist Jamal Hashukaji - but not on Regent Muhammad bin Salman.

According to American sources, this is due to the desire to maintain labor relations between the countries and the fact that Ben Salman is in fact the de facto ruler of the kingdom.

According to the State Department, 76 Saudi citizens will be barred from entering the United States under a new policy known as the "Hashukaji Ban," which will target anyone who threatens or attacks activists, regime opponents and journalists on behalf of foreign governments.

The Ministry of Finance also imposed sanctions on Ahmad al-Asiri, the former deputy head of Saudi intelligence, and on the rapid intervention force, which were directly linked to Hashukaji's assassination at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

Al-Asiri was accused of planning the operation and some members of the elimination team were part of the rapid intervention force, known as the "Tiger Team."

The force, which is part of the Saudi Royal Guard, obeys the regent directly.
