The United States today (Tuesday) imposed sanctions on seven senior Russian officials and 14 other bodies linked to unconventional weapons, following the poisoning of opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

Officials in the Biden administration have reiterated the statement that Navalny was poisoned with nerve gas by the Russian security service.

Authorities, who spoke on condition of anonymity, reiterated President Joe Biden's call for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin to release Nabalani.

The latter began this week wanting his prison sentence in a notorious penal colony.

Sources said the sanctions, the first imposed by the Biden administration on Russia, were in line with the EU.

The union itself last week imposed sanctions on four senior officials close to Putin in response to Navalny's assassination attempt.

Russia denies involvement in the poisoning, warning that it will respond to Western sanctions against it.

Senior officials did not specify who was sanctioned at this time.

In addition to them, the 14 bodies on which the sanctions were imposed were mostly involved in the manufacture of biological and chemical weapons.

One source said Washington was planning further responses against Moscow's "unstable acts", such as the widespread cyber attack against the federal government.

Biden has vowed to use a tough hand against the Kremlin, following the affection shown by his predecessor Donald Trump for President Putin and his opposition in many cases to punishing Russia.
