The inhumane conditions in the former Hungarian refugee camp Röszke have consequences for the country.
According to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), Hungary treated an asylum-seeker family there unworthily and violated the prohibition of inhuman and degrading treatment.
The court also saw the migrants' right to freedom and security violated.
Hungary now has to pay the children 4500 euros each and the adults 6500 euros each.
Between April and August 2017, the family of five lived in Röszke on the Serbian-Hungarian border in a 13 square meter container.
It was extremely hot there.
The children also did not get adequate food, it said in the complaint.
In addition, one of the migrants received no food because he had repeatedly sought asylum in Hungary.
The court ruled that the situation violated their rights, especially because the mother was pregnant and the children were young.
The European Court of Human Rights is part of the Council of Europe and is located in Strasbourg.
Together they are committed to upholding human rights in their 47 member states.
The European Court of Justice in Luxembourg had previously ruled that the accommodation of asylum seekers in the Hungarian Röszke refugee camp was equivalent to imprisonment due to the conditions there.
He had called for the transit zone to be closed.
Hungary complied with this last year.
