Because of the action against the Russian opposition politician Alexej Navalny, the USA are also preparing sanctions against Russia after the European Union.

The broadcaster CNN reported on Monday, citing two government officials, that Washington would coordinate with the EU on the type and timing of the sanctions.

The sanctions would be the first US punitive measures against Russia since President Joe Biden took office and would mark a clear departure from his predecessor's policy on Russia.

Ex-US President Donald Trump was accused of indulgence in relation to Russian head of state Vladimir Putin.

Biden had described the February arrest of Navalny as "politically motivated."

The EU ambassadors gave the green light on Monday for sanctions against Russia for the action against the most prominent opposition member there, Navalny.

As reported by the AFP news agency, citing EU circles, Brussels wants to block four high-ranking representatives of the Russian judicial and criminal prosecution system with entry and property freezes.

The EU is using its new sanctions framework against human rights violations for the first time.

Navalny had been sentenced to more than two and a half years in a prison camp for allegedly violating his probation requirements.

The decision was strongly condemned internationally and sparked mass protests in Russia.

The 44-year-old was treated in hospital in Germany after a poison attack in August for which he blames the Kremlin.

Immediately after his return to Russia in January, he was arrested for allegedly violating the requirements of a previous trial while in Germany.

The federal government demanded his immediate release.
