If the terms "woke" are widely used by young activists, they are far from being acclaimed by the majority of people, according to a survey.

The theses of the “woke” left such as “inclusive writing”, “systemic racism”, “decolonial thought” and “toxic masculinity” may be in vogue in militant circles and universities, they are a long way off. to have entered into everyday language.

According to an Ifop survey for

L'Express

magazine

,

None of these expressions are mastered by the majority of French people.

The most “popular” among respondents is inclusive writing.

34% of respondents are able to explain what it is.

It is closely followed by “white privilege (32%) and“ rape culture ”(30%).

In contrast, the lesser known terms are “woke thinking” (6%), “intersectionality of struggles” (9%) and “cancel culture” (11%).

The level of education is one of the two main variables of the study.

People with at least a higher diploma (bac +3) are more able to master the concept of "inclusive writing" than holders of CAP-BEP (57% know what it is, 23% ignore it). ), that of “white privilege” (48% versus 20%), “gender studies” (43% versus 18%) and “rape culture” (41% versus 19%).

Conversely, none of these terms is the prerogative of the least educated segments of the population.

"

The highly educated [people] are more connected to current events and the media sensitive to these concepts

", explains Jérôme Fourquet, of Ifop.

The other big variable is the age, "in

particular because these theses are especially diffused at the university or in a certain number of media very [consulted] by the young people

", notes the pollster.

Only two concepts - relatively old - are better known by those over 35 than by those aged 18-35: decolonial thought (22% against 20% of the French) and inclusive writing (36% against 29%).

All the others are the prerogative of the youngest, such as the “rape culture” (41% under 35, 26% among those over 35), “racialized people” (35% against 21%), “Toxic masculinity” (24% against 15%), the “cancel culture” (15% against 9%).
