A 6.1-magnitude earthquake strikes near Russia's Kuril Islands

The Ministry of Emergencies in Sakhalin Province in the Russian Far East announced that an earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale has been detected near Shikotan Island of the Kuril Islands.

In a statement, the ministry indicated that "the earthquake occurred today, 108 kilometers east of the town of Malukorilskoye, with a depth of 50 kilometers."

She explained that no injuries or material damage were recorded as a result of the earthquake, and the ministry did not issue any warning about the possibility of tsunami waves.
