ROME - "Now my battle is to allow all European citizens and my Italian friends to have the doses they need as quickly as possible.
The production capacity in Europe will reach 2-3 billion doses per year
: this is the goal we have for the end of the year ".
This was stated - in an interview with Corriere della Sera - by
EU Commissioner for Industry, Thierry Breton
, at the helm of the task force to accelerate the production of anti-Covid vaccines in Europe.
It aims to reach 100 million at the end of March, but at the moment, he points out,
about one in three doses is not used
As for the validation procedures, he clarifies that "
if a country, for reasons of urgency, does not want to wait for EMA authorization, it can do so at its own risk and peril
, and does not have the total guarantee of scientific security provided by EMA. Great Britain chose this path and gave the green light at least a month before us ".
"The doses in the US were delivered about five weeks earlier than in Europe. We have this delay - he says - because we wanted to be one hundred percent sure that vaccines had no risks for EU citizens".
Then he lists the numbers: "
To date, about 43 million doses have been delivered in Europe, in the USA about 96 million
. Four weeks ago, the United States numbered 50 million. This is how the discard with the United States was born. At the end of March the our goal is to reach 95-100 million doses. But compared to the 43 million doses delivered, 30 million 204 thousand doses were administered. 6,542,260 doses were delivered to Italy and 4,434,131 were administered ".
"Member States - he says - must quickly put their vaccination policy into practice because the production capacity of doses increases week by week".
