The repercussions of the spread of the Corona epidemic caused the consumption of Swiss chocolate to drop in 2020 to its lowest level in nearly 40 years.
According to what was reported by the French Press Agency, the Confederation of Chocolate Producers (Chocosoys) confirmed that in 2020 the Swiss consumed 9.9 kilograms of chocolate per person, compared to 10.4 kilograms in 2019, which is a figure below the symbolic minimum threshold of 10 kilograms since 1982 /.
He added that chocolate production also decreased by 10 percent during 2020 compared to the previous year, to reach 180 thousand tons. The value of exports, which represent almost 70 percent of the sales volume of Swiss chocolate makers, decreased by 11.5 percent to 126 thousand tons.
In his turn, President of the Chocosoys Union, Urs Furrer, pointed out that the reason for the decline in chocolate consumption is partly due to the decrease in the number of tourists and the precautionary measures that limited the purchases of chocolate varieties, which affected the annual statistics of production, consumption and export.
