«Justice!»

That was the first word that Rosa Franco shouted before the Third Higher Risk Court "A", in Guatemala, upon hearing the guilty verdict against the man accused of murdering her daughter, María Isabel Véliz Franco.

This Monday, the three judges sentenced Gustavo Adolfo Bolaños Acevedo to 30 years in prison, accused of murdering the 15-year-old girl.

The mother sought justice for 20 years.

His daughter was murdered on December 16, 2001, and her body was found in a vacant lot in Guatemala City.

According to forensic reports, she was sexually abused and tortured.

María Isabel's mother told the media on several occasions that, to reach this verdict, she had undergone "torment."

Rosa Franco assures that she reported the disappearance of her daughter on four occasions.

However, she says the authorities did not listen to her.

In May 2014, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) condemned the State of Guatemala as responsible for having violated the rights of María Isabel Véliz Franco and for the inconsistencies in the investigations to resolve the case.

Bolaños Acevedo was arrested on July 24, 2019 as a suspect, 18 years after the murder of the minor.

As part of the State's compensation for the IACHR's conviction, the Guatemalan Public Ministry created the alert with the name Isabel-Claudina, which is currently used as a search mechanism to find missing women.
