At least 10 rockets hit the Iraqi city of Ein al-Assad today (Wednesday), US forces said.

The attack happened less than a week after the US-led attack on Syria, in response to rocket fire on another base where its forces are stationed.

No casualties were reported and no organization has claimed responsibility at this time.

In two days, the pope is due to visit the country, despite the deteriorating security in parts of the country.

A Baghdad operations commander told Reuters earlier that about 13 rockets had been fired about eight kilometers from the base, which is in the western province of Anbar. Launched from a pickup truck in an agricultural area,

Ein al-Assad's base is one of the largest bases in Iraq, and houses foreign and Iraqi forces.

On the night between Thursday and Friday, U.S. fighter jets attacked Iranian-backed Iraqi Shiite militias.

At least one fighter was killed in the attack, which was the first overt military operation approved by US President Joe Biden.

It was limited in scope, and Washington made it clear that it was not interested in escalation.
