The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is recovering data from the black box on the Genesis SUV courtesy vehicle, which golf legend Tiger Woods was driving before his accident last week.

The department told CNN in a statement that it executed a search warrant for the black box, but that it "had no additional information on the recovered data."

Speaking to USA Today, Deputy Sheriff John Schloegl said Tuesday that the development was due diligence only and that he did not view the investigation as a criminal investigation.

"If someone is involved in a traffic collision, we have to reconstruct the traffic collision, if there was reckless driving, if someone was answering his cell phone or something like that," Schloegl told the outlet.

“We determine if there was a crime.

If there was no crime, we closed the case and it was a regular traffic collision.

When contacted by CNN for clarification on the court order, the Department declined to provide further information.

Authorities have previously said they believe the incident was "purely an accident" but would have to remove the black box event recorder from the vehicle to make that determination.

A long road to recovery

Woods was driving last Tuesday in Rancho Palos Verdes, near Los Angeles, shortly after 7 a.m. local time, when his SUV jumped the median of the road and crossed two lanes on the opposite direction of the road, before hitting a sidewalk, hitting a tree and flipping sideways in brush, Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said last week.

He is believed to have been traveling at high speed before the accident, authorities said.

There were no skid marks or other indications of braking, according to the sheriff.

Woods, 45, suffered leg injuries that required the implantation of a rod, screws, nails, and a surgical release of the muscle covering, which surgeons likely believed would save his leg from amputation, the ER doctor said. Dr. Jeremy Faust to CNN.

While recovering, Woods tweeted Sunday: "It's hard to explain how moving it was today when I turned on the TV and saw all the red shirts."

His remarks came after several PGA Tour golfers were seen wearing red T-shirts in tribute to Woods on Sunday.

"To all the golfers and fans, you are really helping me through this difficult time," added Woods.
