In the town of Vetlanda in southern Sweden, a man attacked and injured several people.
The police are investigating a possible terrorist background to the crime.
The attacker allegedly attacked the victims with a stabbing weapon.
The young man - allegedly a lone perpetrator between the ages of 20 and 30 - was then shot and arrested by the police.
He was taken to a hospital injured.
The motive for the crime is just as unclear as the exact type of weapon.
Vetlanda is around 270 kilometers southwest of Stockholm.
According to police, eight people in the town were affected in different ways by the incident - initially no information was given about the nature of their possible injuries.
Interior Minister Mikael Damberg said in a message that several people had been seriously injured, according to the TT news agency.
There were no reports of deaths.
