"Used, then thrown away": the distress of the teachers of the Covid brigade in Ile-de-France

Called to replace vulnerable teachers in the midst of a health crisis, hundreds of contractors from Ile-de-France have not been renewed

She feels like she has abandoned them.

And worry about the most fragile of them.

After more than two months of replacement carried out in a class in Essonne, Carole

(the first name has been changed)

was forced to say goodbye to her students.

Like about sixty other contract workers in the department, she was recruited at the beginning of December to compensate for the absence of so-called vulnerable teachers, and therefore unable to ensure their face-to-face lessons.

But his contract came to an abrupt end on the first day of the February vacation.

“From the start, I asked the National Education services if it would be renewed after this first period.

They told me that they could not guarantee anything, but that they would do their best, ”remembers this thirty-something, who had already provided a few replacements in previous years.

“It's a job that I love.

But the..."

Carole is disgusted to be put on the floor: “It's a job that I love.

But there, I have the feeling of having been used and then thrown away.

The worst part is when I think about my students.

This week, I understand that a replacement has been recruited, but after ... mystery.

"

Essonne is no exception.

In Seine-Saint-Denis, 250 contract workers were part of the “Covid brigade” from January 4 to February 12.

In Val-de-Marne, around fifty contract workers saw their contract end on February 28.

Departures that caused a mess.

For this return to school in Val-de-Marne, according to figures reported by SNUDI-FO 94 - a union of teachers and school directors -, three teachers were missing for example at the Paul-Bert school in Chevilly-Larue, and four more at the Elisa-Lesourd nursery school in Fontenay-sous-Bois.

Budget problem

The solution, if not to send the pupils home, was in particular to dispatch them to the other classes.

"There is no better way to create clusters", regrets Luc Bénizeau, departmental secretary of SNUDI-FO 94.

"The ministry did not anticipate anything", annoys Caroline Marchand, co-secretary of SNUIPP-FSU 93, union of 1st degree teachers.

And yet, the alert was launched in December by the Federation of parents' councils (FCPE).

In Essonne, the issue was also discussed during the Departmental Council of National Education on February 8.

“We were made to understand that there was not the necessary budget to keep them.

We do not have enough replacements in normal times, so in this sanitary period, these 60 contract workers are essential, indignant David Roussel, departmental secretary of SNUDI-FO 91. How can we ensure educational continuity in these conditions?

In the end, they hire people to do daycare, not to ensure long-term learning.

"

"We will quickly find ourselves in an unmanageable situation"

On February 9, the subject was once again put on the table during the ministerial technical committee.

In particular, this allows discussions on workforce management in the presence of the Minister or his representative.

Without much result.

“We think of humans.

They are first interested in finances and forget the interest of the student, deplores Sonia Perez, co-secretary of SNUIPP-FSU 91. It is the replacements, called upon in the event of sick leave for example, who will be called to take over from these Covid brigades.

But at the slightest new absentee, we will no longer have anyone to teach the lessons.

We will quickly find ourselves in an unmanageable situation.

“Unless the schools are closed in the next few weeks, we need these colleagues.

Vulnerable teachers will always be in the coming months, insists Caroline Marchand in turn.

We are also very angry to see how these contractors have been treated.

"

Many, in view of the health situation, were convinced that their contracts would be extended.

“I did not even warn the parents, Carole guilty.

Some students were worried about not meeting me at the start of the school year.

I told them not to worry.

I have the impression of having lied to them ... In my head, it was obvious that I was going to be renewed.

The teacher I was replacing will not be coming back.

I never imagined that they could get rid of me like this.

"

"There, I just left the keys to the class and goodbye"

Françoise

(the first name has been changed)

also finds it difficult to see this situation.

Recruited in November in a small town north of Beauvais (Oise), she was already the fourth person to teach in this class.

Today, she has the feeling of "being interchangeable".

“It seemed like a no-brainer that I would stay after everything I had put in place,” she says.

Beyond my personal situation, it is very frustrating and worrying for the students.

Casually, it's complicated for children to be so often confronted with changes in methods.

I had already done the end-of-year programming and planned to bring in speakers for classroom activities.

I don't even know if my successor will continue this work.

"

She also wonders about the evaluations she had given to the children before the holidays.

" What do I have to do ?

Correct copies voluntarily?

The same goes for the assessments which must be written in mid-April, where she will have "no say in the matter" of the pupils which she will have nevertheless ensured the follow-up for four months.

“There, I just left the keys to the classroom, and goodbye.

"

The Academy of Versailles will finally extend its contract workers

In this department, "in view of the points of tension of the replacement, the assignment of a new contingent of contractual teachers is under study", indicates the services of National Education.

Nearly two-thirds of contract teachers previously recruited should join a post from March 8.

For its part, the Academy of Versailles, which we contacted, announced this Wednesday evening that these one-off recruitments which were intended, initially, to cover the period from December to February, will be extended until May 31.

And that the teachers recruited during the first phase are given priority in order to continue their mission.
