The corona pandemic is hard on Lufthansa.

The airline has to report a horrific loss for 2020.

There is hardly any rapid improvement in sight.

Munich - The corona pandemic caused Lufthansa a record loss last year.

The bottom line is that the airline posted a loss of 6.7 billion euros for 2020 after a profit of 1.2 billion a year earlier.

The airline announced on Thursday.

In view of the ongoing travel restrictions, Lufthansa boss Carsten Spohr was also more cautious than before for the current year.

The flight offer will probably only reach 40 to 50 percent of the level from the pre-crisis year 2019 in 2021, Spohr said on Thursday.

So far, he had thought up to 60 percent possible.

Last year, sales at the federally supported group fell by two thirds to 13.6 billion euros due to the corona pandemic.

The dividend is canceled again.

For the current year, Spohr assumes that the loss will be lower and that Lufthansa will not have to make full use of the state aid granted totaling 9 billion euros, despite the ongoing difficult environment.

"We expect stronger demand again from the summer as soon as the restrictive travel restrictions are reduced due to the further spread of tests and vaccines," said Spohr.

Lufthansa could increase its flight offer in the short term to up to 70 percent of the pre-crisis level.
