Climate protection goals: City of Penzberg has two problem children with energy consumption

Climate protection manager Carl-Christian Zimmermann has submitted an energy report for 13 buildings belonging to the city of Penzberg. Climate protection manager Carl-Christian Zimmermann has submitted an energy report for 13 buildings belonging to the city of Penzberg.

The Bürgermeister-Prandl-Schule and the museum are problem children when it comes to energy consumption.

But other buildings also use too much energy.

There is already talk of a renovation backlog.

Penzberg - In November 2019, the Penzberg city council put together a climate package.

Part of the package was the requirement to create an energy report for city buildings that lists electricity and heat consumption.

On this basis, it was said, a renovation plan should follow in order to achieve climate neutrality for the buildings by 2030.

The city's climate protection manager Carl-Christian Zimmermann has now presented this energy report, in which the “Oberland energy transition” was also involved.

It shows the consumption for 2019 and defines target values to which consumption is to be reduced.

For example, the town hall, the youth center and the senior citizens' apartments on Sigmundstrasse were examined as well as the fire brigade building, the AWO day care center on Winterstrasse, the town hall and the youth center.

Heat consumption: The "greatest need for action" at the Bürgermeister-Prandl-Schule

What catches the eye when comparing, said Zimmermann at the presentation to the city council, is the Mayor Prandl School.

According to the report, it is lonely at the top in terms of heat consumption.

The annual consumption (1.8 million kilowatt hours) is also three times as high as the target value.

This has nothing to do with ventilation during the corona pandemic - all values are from 2019.

At the Bürgermeister-Prandl-Schule there is “the greatest need for action,” said Zimmermann.

A heating refurbishment as well as a partial replacement of windows and facade insulation in 2018 apparently brought little benefit. The heat consumption is back at the same level as before the refurbishment, according to the report.

The school building is also the front runner in the building comparison when it comes to electricity consumption.

It is twice as high as the target value.

When it comes to electricity consumption, the museum is the problem child

When it comes to electricity consumption, however, the Penzberg Museum is the problem child, while it does well when it comes to heat consumption.

It stands out, said Zimmermann.

The museum has the second highest power consumption, but it is many times above the target value.

According to the climate protection manager, the problem is the ventilation system, "which probably doesn't work so well in regular operation".

He also determined that there was an “urgent need for action” at the funeral hall at the cemetery.

It has the second highest power consumption, which is also many times higher than the target value.

The report paints a better picture for other municipal buildings.

Nevertheless, he sees a need for action in the senior citizens' apartments, the primary school on Birkenstrasse, the AWO children's home on Birkenstrasse, the town hall and the fire station - in all cases with regard to heat consumption.

Climate protection manager announces renovation concept - BfP warns of renovation backlog

Climate protection manager Zimmermann explained that he will now launch an energetic renovation concept based on this data from 2019.

At the moment, however, it is only at the beginning.

The energy report, he said, is the first step.

The building authority stated that an extensive inventory is currently taking place for the Bürgermeister-Prandl-Schule, which the school is to evaluate with regard to the need for renovation.

For the increased power consumption, it was said, there was still “no plausible explanation”.

Regarding the museum, the building authority declared that the ventilation system had to take over the entire cooling function of the building due to “defective concrete core activations and incorrect planning of the system”.

SPD parliamentary group leader Adrian Leinweber asked in this context whether someone could be made liable for recourse.

"When I look at it that way, there are a lot of projects coming up," said BfP parliamentary group leader Armin Jabs.

It looks like "a renovation backlog".

He suggested that the responsibilities should be bundled in a central office in the town hall, "so that we can get the buildings renovated quickly".
