The balance is devastating: Corona is causing the tourism figures in the Freising district to collapse drastically.

The number of overnight stays alone is devastating.

  • Corona caused the tourism figures in the Freising district to collapse drastically.

  • The number of overnight stays has fallen by more than 50 percent.

  • Tourism officer wants to counteract this with Corona-compliant ideas.

Freising

- The tourism development in the Freising district has been impressive in recent years.

In the period between 2013 and 2019, there was an increase of 25.5 percent in guest arrivals and an increase of 31.5 percent in the number of overnight stays.

"But the corona pandemic has suddenly stopped this upward trend and is putting the hosts and restaurants in the region to the test," says Martina Mayer, tourism officer at the Freising district office.

The Corona crisis also led to a massive slump in tourism in the Freising district.

According to the Bavarian State Office for Statistics, the number of overnight stays in 2020 fell by 51.4 percent to 517,900, the number of guest arrivals by as much as 62.2 percent to 245,700. In comparison: throughout Upper Bavaria, the decrease in terms of overnight stays was 44 .7 percent, in the Munich area even at 52.4 percent.

The biggest break-ins are near the airport

Almost three quarters of the guests came to the Freising district from Germany.

The share of foreign overnight guests fell from 32 percent in 2019 to 25 percent in 2020.

The largest burglaries were recorded in the communities near the airport (Neufahrn, Eching, Hallbergmoos) and in the city of Freising.

The average occupancy rate for businesses with ten or more beds in the Freising region fell to 22.6 percent.

Only the average length of stay increased from 1.6 days in the previous year to 2.1 days.

This means that the guests who were in the Freising district stayed longer on site.

"The aim will also be in the future to increase the average length of stay through targeted advertising and marketing measures and to make a longer stay in the district more attractive to guests," said Mayer.

The tourism figures were promising until 2019

By 2019, tourism in the Freising district had developed very positively.

The number of overnight stays once again cracked the one million mark.

According to the State Office for Statistics, it was 1.1 million - an increase of five percent compared to the previous year.

Guest arrivals fell by 2.7 percent, but the average length of stay increased to 1.6 days (compared to 1.5 days in previous years).

The average occupancy rate for commercial establishments with ten or more beds was 46.7 percent and thus slightly above the Bavarian average of 46.3 percent.

The study by dwif Consulting GmbH in the Munich area on the subject of tourism as an economic factor in 2019 confirms that tourism not only primarily affects the hospitality industry (hotels and restaurants), but also has a positive effect on other sectors such as retail and other services as part of the value chain. The result: every fifth guest in Upper Bavaria sleeps in the Munich area.

These include the districts of Munich, Dachau, Ebersberg, Erding, Fürstenfeldbruck and Freising.

Corona has also changed the behavior of day trippers

An overnight guest in a hotel spends an average of € 173.40, a guest in private accommodation € 80.40 and a day-tripper € 23.80.

Overall, this led to gross sales of 1.75 billion euros.

The hospitality industry (hotel and restaurant business) benefited 52 percent, the retail sector 29 percent and other services 19 percent.

Corona has also changed the interests of day-trippers, reports the district office: According to the "dwif day trip monitor 2020", activities such as hiking, cycling and nature experiences come first.

Visits to sights, leisure facilities and events have fallen back in the ranking due to corona - which has to do with the month-long lockdown.

Tourism officer wants to take countermeasures

"The district of Freising is picking up on this trend and this year is focusing on the further development of outdoor offers, from which locals and guests can benefit equally," says tourism officer Mayer.

At the beginning of April a new cycling map will appear with various tour suggestions.

Further bike tours will then also be available digitally on the “outdooractive” tour portal.

As part of the “Rausspaziert!” Campaign, the most beautiful walks and easy hikes in the Freising district communities are currently being prepared and digitized.

And the now well-established “Garden Treasures & Nature Experiences” brochure will also be available in an updated version in spring.
