The Green Barley Breeding Unit in the town of Tal Hasel in the countryside of Aleppo seeks to support breeders by providing fodder for livestock with high nutritional value and competitive prices for regular barley, which will positively affect the production of milk and meat.

SANA camera visited the town of Tal Hasil in the southeastern countryside of Aleppo and viewed the work stages of the green barley breeding unit, which was established in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and achieved success and beneficial results, according to agricultural engineer Ismail Koreni, director of the branch of the Livestock Development Project in Aleppo, the party responsible for Technical and technical follow-up of the unit.

Corini indicated to SANA's correspondent that the work on the breeding unit project consists of two parts, the first is technical, related to the green barley breeding process to secure fodder for livestock, and the second is community-based, on the unit’s investment by the beneficiaries through training and qualifying them to manage it. Smallholders.

He also indicated that the unit works with the solar energy system and produces one ton of green fodder daily, and the number of beneficiaries is 25 beneficiaries, as a first trial, who were selected within the targeting criteria of small cattle breeders, pointing out that the results were studied on the ground and an increase in milk quantities was observed at a rate of 3 to 4 kilograms. As well as providing an alternative source for dry feed.

Corini pointed out that the experience of the unit is new and pioneering and should be circulated to all governorates, as the collective investment process for any project creates sustainability for it, stressing that green fodder is rich in vitamins, enzymes and protein compared to dry feed, as well as containing materials that increase fertility rates in animals.

In turn, the veterinarian Rashid Muhammad, head of the livestock department in the livestock development project in Aleppo, referred to the mechanism of the unit’s work, which includes spraying barley seeds with water every 4 hours for one minute, and adjusting temperatures between 20 and 22 degrees Celsius and humidity between 60 and 65 degrees. Each 1 kg of dry seeds produces 8 kg of green barley and the germination process takes 8 days.

Among the beneficiaries of the breeding unit project in the town of Tal Hasel, the cattle and poultry breeder, Ali Kalo, confirmed that the amount of milk after feeding the cows of green barley increased, which was confirmed by Umm Bilal, noting that the green barley breeding project makes it easier for cattle breeders to obtain fodder.

Breeder Hussain Kibeh pointed out the quality of the germinated barley, which is rich in vitamins, in addition to being less expensive than dry fodder and more than 20 percent more.

The barley cultivation process has spread for years in many countries of the world due to its economic importance in saving time, effort and money to provide the necessary pasture for livestock projects by designing special rooms equipped for this matter that give high productivity.
