Masons, painters, plumbers… 46,000 construction jobs to be filled before the Paris Olympics

With the work of Greater Paris and the preparation for the Olympic Games, the sector is booming. Companies need to recruit

When the building works… Despite the Covid crisis, the sector's recruitment needs are still there, the dynamic remains the same: “The needs for jobs and skills linked to the work of Greater Paris, the Olympic and Paralympic Games and the challenges of energy transition are before us, explains the French Building Federation of Ile-de-France (FFB).

The figures speak for themselves: by 2024, the building will have to hire 46,000 people, or 9,100 people per year to cover the future departures of employees in the sector (7,100) and also the creation of new positions in a booming sector. .

"

The 12 most sought-after trades, according to the professional body, are masons, roofers, worksite supervision trades, painters, electricians, plumbers, heating engineers, carpenters, carpenters, metalworkers, tilers, plasterers ...

"There is a concern for the orientation of young people"

“These skills have already been lacking for several years,” notes the FFB.

There is a concern for the guidance of young people in their educational and professional career.

These professions do not necessarily have a good press when they have changed.

Companies have made real efforts to attract young people: wages are above conventional minimums, even for apprentices, and real work has been done to prevent accidents.

Image is very important and companies have understood this, especially the smaller ones.

The sector is in fact made up, alongside the majors, 80% of VSEs and SMEs with less than ten employees.

The branch therefore still needs to work on its image with young people, but also with their parents and teachers so that the choice of a professional course is no longer considered as a sideline.

Even though the region's apprenticeship training centers accommodate around 11,000 young people, professionals do not hesitate to “sell” their trades in colleges.

“Often, our interlocutors are astonished at the advantages that the sector can provide, such as a contribution to the financing of a driving license, for example.

"

20,000 homes could not be built

If the sector is recruiting, the Covid impact has not been negligible.

“When there was the first generalized confinement, there were no more masks than sanitary products, everything had to be put in place.

And most of the material suppliers were closed.

Finally, the adaptation of sites to health standards comes at a cost.

We are also in negotiation with the contracting authorities (Editor's note: the person or the institution requesting the project) so that they participate in this additional cost ”, underlines the Federation of building of Ile-de-France.

Even before the large infrastructure projects in Greater Paris, such as the supermetro, which mainly concern public works companies, the need for jobs is felt in housing.

A delay was taken for new housing.

“The State-region plan contract pointed out the need to build 90,000 housing units each year, we are at around 70,000, calculates the FFB.

There was a shutdown due to the health crisis, but also the municipal elections with decision-making at a standstill.

If there is one region where there is a lack of housing, it is Ile-de-France.
