BRUSSELS - The offices of the European Parliament in Italy organize two online meetings on 4 and 5 March on the occasion of International Women's Day.
In light of the crucial role played by women during the pandemic and their centrality in managing the recovery and launching the Next Generation EU, the two events will address the issues of leadership, employment, reconciliation with family life and female representation. in popular culture.
Recent studies indicate that the Covid-19 pandemic has had a different impact on men and women, putting a strain on a condition that is already often fragile and loaded with tasks for women.
Yet, women have been at the forefront of the fight against coronavirus, not only in key positions in the health sector, in research teams or in EU institutions where we work for a common recovery.
Data collected in several Member States during and after the confinement period indicate that the majority of workers providing essential services in the EU are women: 76% of healthcare workers (doctors, nurses, midwives, residential care home staff) ), 93% of childcare assistants and teachers and 95% of cleaners.
So it is largely thanks to women that our economic, social and health systems, our public life and our essential activities have been preserved and are being maintained.
The argument is heard by our public opinion so much that gender equality, according to a recent survey, ranks first among the values that Italians are asking the European Parliament to defend.
