Washington-SANA

The US House of Representatives passed a bill calling for a comprehensive reform of the US police.

Reuters reported that the "George Floyd Bill of Justice" proposed by the Democrats won the support of 220 members of the House of Representatives, against 212 votes, and with the support of only one Republican member.

The bill bore this name after the African American "George Floyd" who was strangled by police officers last year, which led to widespread protests across the United States denouncing police violence and racial discrimination.

The bill includes measures such as restricting some of the money earmarked for governments

The local law that allows law enforcement officers to use a mechanism of suffocation or pressure on the neck during the arrest process, as happened with "Floyd" and led to his death. It also includes prohibiting police personnel from entering homes to carry out arrest warrants without declaring themselves.

The bill was passed in the House of Representatives in the summer of 2020, but it was not passed by the Senate, and after the Democrats took control of both houses of Congress, they reintroduced the bill.

The bill, which has the support of US President Joe Biden, is being discussed and voted on in the Senate at a later time.

Violent and racist crimes committed by the US police against people of African descent are frequent, while acts of violence based on racial grounds have increased significantly during the presidency of Donald Trump.
