Since the appointment of Abdul Fatah al-Sisi as President of Egypt in June 2014, relations between Cairo and Ankara have deteriorated.

The struggle of the Egyptian president in the "Muslim Brotherhood" movement has set up against him his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan, one of whose hallmarks is the "Brotherhood" movement of the Muslim Brotherhood and is particularly identified with them.

Therefore, the announcement yesterday (Wednesday) by the Turkish Foreign Minister from Blut Chebushalou that "Turkey can sign a maritime border agreement with Egypt" was very surprising.

This was not the first time that Ankara has surprised in the maritime field, after it was first published in "Israel Today" in December on the proposal of Admiral Jihat Yaiji, an associate of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, to regulate the maritime economic border between Turkey and Israel.

The proposal was published in full in an article in the monthly "Turkeyscope" published by the Moshe Dayan Center at Tel Aviv University.

Four months earlier, Ankara had sent a clear message to Jerusalem about its desire to open talks on this issue.

However, due to the corona plague, the process did not evolve.

Israeli-Turkish confrontation live

According to the proposal made by Yiji, the maritime borders of the two countries will be connected at the expense of Cyprus.

And now, it turns out, Erdogan's associate has built a plan for a border agreement with Egypt that aligns with both the plan created by Yiji for a maritime border agreement with Libya, which Erdogan signed with the Tripoli consensus government on November 27, 2019, and quite thoroughly with the first Jerusalem proposal In "Israel Today".

As expected, Admiral Yaji offers maritime territory at the expense of the Republic of Cyprus, but on the other hand he is careful to preserve the possibility of a maritime border with Israel.

"Foreign Minister Chebushaulo's statement is positive and promising," Yaji responded in an interview with Doğu Akdeniz Politik, which covers coverage in the eastern Mediterranean.

According to the Admiral, "Countries need to act pragmatically. For many years we have said that the determination of exclusive economic water zones with Egypt is a crucial factor in determining our southern maritime borders."

Yaji added that "the exclusive economic water demarcation with Egypt should start from the eastern side of the agreement we signed with Libya and continue to the west of the expected border line with Israel. In this way, the agreement will also spoil the expectations of the Greeks and Cypriots."
