The Minister of Government of Ecuador, Patricio Pazmiño, presented his "irrevocable" resignation from the position on Friday, amid questions about his management after the violent riots that left about 80 dead in different prisons in the country in February .
In a letter addressed to President Lenín Moreno and published on his Twitter account, Pazmiño said that his management has been criticized "from various sectors without justification."
He also stated that, "in an act of transparency," the defense of their performance "must be done from the outside."
The official also said that he tested positive for covid-19 for the second time, and that this "exposes him to an enormous risk and the impossibility of continuing to fulfill my responsibilities in accordance with the demands that this delicate position demands."
Days ago, the plenary session of the National Assembly, with a large majority of votes in favor, demanded that President Moreno remove Pazmiño and other officials of the prison system for the events that occurred in four prisons on February 23, where about 80 died. inmates.
Pazmiño appeared during that session and indicated that the management and security of the country's prisons are not the responsibility of the Ministry of Government and the National Police.

So far, President Moreno has not indicated whether he accepts the minister's resignation.
Pazmiño took office at the end of November 2020 when he replaced María Paula Romo.
