Russian police have launched a large-scale operation to recruit personnel, following a series of demonstrations in support of opposition leader Alexei Navalny in recent weeks.

The recruitment is for a demonstration dispersal unit, which has to deal with tens of thousands of demonstrators in Moscow and throughout Russia seeking to express their support for Navalny.

The police forcibly dispersed three huge protests in January and February, close to the time Nabalani returned to Russia from Germany, and later after he was sent to prison.

Following the proliferation of demonstrations, Russian police have embarked on an extensive online recruitment campaign, in an attempt to staff jobs and deal with a wave of protests.

According to Reuters, the ads were published tens of thousands of times in a period of about a month on job search sites in the country, in which candidates were promised a monthly salary of 70,000 rubles (about 3,130 shekels) without any prior experience.

It was further argued that this is a much larger recruitment campaign than in previous years.

For example, on the HeadsHunter website, the ad for the designated unit for dispersing demonstrations was published 1,607 times between January 24 and February 24.

This is compared to 151 job ads in the same period last year.

Recruitment notices were also posted to the Secondary Demonstration Battalion, to which 608 requests were posted compared to 11 last year.

Two Russian National Guard officers claimed that the recruitment was not related to the demonstrations at all, but was intended out of a need for a turnover of police personnel.

In contrast, eight other officers confirmed the suspicions and said there was a need to increase forces: "We need a large recruitment."
